Emergent Justice’s Wrongful Conviction Freedom Warriors is one aspect of our Participatory Defense work, and it follows the guidelines of the Participatory Defense model. This means the virtual group is a working space for individuals working on a Michigan-based wrongful conviction to come together to:
- discuss their individual cases,
- learn from each other,
- brainstorm new approaches to roadblocks encountered on individual cases
This group will also help form and lead Emergent Justice’s efforts to build collective power around issues that lead to wrongful conviction, policy changes to reduce the likelihood of a wrongful conviction and collectively demand changes to the parts of the system that keep their loved one locked up.
As part of a grassroots effort, members will have opportunities to develop their organizing and leadership skills while helping create campaigns to create year-round awareness of wrongful convictions in Michigan.
This virtual group typically meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 6:30 – 8:00 pm (EST). To keep our virtual space as safe as possible, we ask that you complete the registration form and then schedule an introductory conversation as described in the Next Steps email you will receive after registering for the group.
If you are interested in working to end wrongful convictions, but are not working on a specific case, please consider joining the Wrongful Conviction Freedom Warriors Allies group. We will share related events and information in that space. It will also be the first space in which we will roll out campaigns to effect change.
