SB 487 Needs a Public Hearing
Michigan Senate Bill 487 would create a Community Advisory Oversight Committee for Michigan’s only women’s prison. But right now, this bill is sitting in the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee. It needs a public hearing to have any chance of improving the lives of those at WHV. Write an email to Senator Roger Victory, Committee Chair, asking that SB 487 be given a public hearing.
Address Inhumane & Dangerous Conditions at Huron Valley Women’s Prison
Conditions at Michigan’s one prison for women have been problematic long before COVID. Overcrowding, lack of access to mental health and adequate medical services, lack of programming, major staffing shortages which lead to fatigue and outright abuse, antiquated buildings, sewage & heating and cooling systems, and more have plagued Women’s Huron Valley for years. COVID 19 has exacerbated these problems.
