Voting is important, but it’s just the beginning. We also need to hold our elected officials accountable for the promises they made during their campaigns. This involves monitoring their decisions and speaking out when they fail to fulfill those promises.
Eli Savit ran on promises of revamping Washtenaw’s criminal justice system to be more equitable and more compassionate. This past Thursday, Brian Geiringer of What’s Left Ypsi published an article in which we learn that Mr. Savit has fallen short on many of his most significant promises.
What we found most disappointing are the many times Prosecutor Savit’s progressive policy “changes” come with exceptions (hidden in fine print) that reduce their impact to a drop in the bucket.
How can you let Mr. Savit know you are watching and that you expect more?
Email (savite@washtenaw.org) or call [(734) 222-6682] him and, as Brian Geiringer urges in this article, tell Prosecutor Savit that you want him to:
- Cease all prosecution of drug-related incidents
- Cease all prosecution of any charges resulting from a Pretext Stop—defined as any non-emergency stop
- Drop all charges against Jackson; provide him an opportunity to clear his record
If you live in Wastenaw County, be sure to tell him you are one of his constituents.
You can also join members of What’s Left and Graduate Employees’ Organization 3550 for a rally to Keep Jackson Free this Tuesday outside the 22nd Circuit Court. After the rally, some attendees will attend Jackson’s court appearance at 1pm.
